The Top Five Reasons Why People Do Not Activate Their Spiritual Gifts

1. They have not yet met Jesus. If someone meets Jesus and declares Him as Lord over their life, it is nearly impossible for them not to be passionate to pursue a relationship with him by sacrificially serving other people. The way you grow in your love for Jesus is by loving those around you — doing what? serving them — with what? Your spiritual gifts.

2. They have not been properly trained/equipped to uncover/activate their gifts for the benefit of the people in their life.

3. They have not yet made the connection between their spiritual gift and the gospel of Jesus Christ. We do not practice generosity for generosity’s sake – we do it because Jesus Christ was generous in giving His life for us, in spite of us. We do not lead for leading’ sake – we lead because Christ first led us and is continuing to lead us. We do not provide mercy/helps in and of itself but rather because God extended mercy to us by sending His Son Jesus to die on the cross, in our place. So the connection between spiritual gifts and the gospel of Jesus most certainly must be ascertained before a person becomes passionate about using their gifts.

4. Having spiritual gifts does not automatically equate to having spiritual maturity. These gifts can be mis-used, under-used or not used at all. Either one of these is a blatant disregard for the gift that God has given you.

5. Because the default mode of the human heart is laziness/lethargy/apathy towards anything spiritual. This is why we must constantly be filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18) and beg for Jesus to do a great work IN us so that He can do a great work THROUGH us. This takes sacrifice/time/effort/vulnerability – and for some – it is too much to give up. If you are not emptying of yourself consistently, you will be full of your self constantly. And when you are full of yourself, you have no room to fit others in – including serving them with the gifts that God has given unto you, freely and undeservingly.

Point 2, Is very true for a lot of people including myself earlier in my life, its sad to see and hear about people who don’t even know that Spiritual Gifts are existent. The phrase itself is a taboo for people.

    1. Educate yourself and then equip others! 🙂

  2. Great post Bogdan. I think another reason is the fear of failure. In the parable of the talents(Mt. 25) The third servant hid the talents due to the fear of failure. However, the important aspect is to overcome our fears so we can be stewards of the gifts and talents God has given us. I just found your blog and look forward to connecting with you more.

I would also add another reason. Believers are not given opportunity to exercise their spiritual gifts. Often times churches do not provide environment where believers can use their spiritual gifts for the good of the church… Often times the church provides a model in which only small group of people fills the available ministry slots (preaching, teaching, singing, etc…) Where the majority of believers become spectators…
